U.S. EPA Region 6 - Tar Creek Superfund Site Spending Reduced, Work Continues June 2012 Since 2010, when remediation at the Tar Creek Operable Unit 4 (OU4) project began, approximately 2 million tons of contaminated materials have been removed from proper- ties, and more than 300 acres and several mine shafts and large subsidence features have been filled in. Available funding continues to present a challenge. All federal agencies whose activities govern environmental protection and sustainable development across the United States are presenting budget requests that reflect a govern- ment-wide effort to reduce spending and find cost-savings. As a result of limited funding, site remediation efforts must slow down, and this will include the Tar Creek OU4 activi- ties. Please be patient as we continue to focus on fulfilling EPA's core mission to protect public health and the envi- ronment for all American families. We will continue our efforts to clean up OU4 properties as originally planned. As we move forward, the process to obtain access agree- ments will continue for this project. Although progress may be a little slower than we would like, we certainly appreciate the community's continued cooperation and support and look forward to remediating all properties where access has been provided now and in the future. If you have questions concerning site activities, please con- tact Janetta Coats, U.S. EPA Community Involvement Coordinator, at 214.665.7308 (800.533.3508 toll-free), Bob Sullivan, U.S. EPA Remedial Project Manager for OU2, at 214.665.2223 (800.533.3508 toll-free), or Ursula Lennox, U.S. EPA Remedial Project Manager for OU4, at 214.665.6743 (800.533.3508 toll-free).
