From about 1970 to 1974, the PJP Landfill Company operated a commercial landfill at the site, accepting chemical and industrial waste. Landfill operations contaminated leachate and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. Following cleanup, groundwater and leachate monitoring are ongoing. In March 2008, AMB Corporation purchased part of the site. They have begun building a warehouse and transfer station, with completion of construction expected in 2014. Jersey City is working on construction of a park on another part of the site. Under current conditions at the site, potential or actual human exposures are under control.
