PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The RiverRenew Tunnel System project will remediate four combined sewer overflow outfalls in
Alexandria by directing the combined sewage to the AlexRenew Water Resource Recovery
facility to be treated before being discharged. The project includes the construction of a 20
million gallon per day tunnel dewatering pumping station and 130 million gallon per day wet
weather pumping station. Upon completion, the project will prevent millions of gallons of
sewage mixed with rainwater from contaminating Hooffs Run, Hunting Creek, and the Potomac
River.

PROJECT BENEFITS

•	Reduces the average volume of overflows to waterways from 140 million gallons to less
than 16 million gallons.

•	Decreases the frequency of overflows from 70 events to less than 4 events on an annual
average basis.

•	Saves the City of Alexandria an estimated $63 million from financing with a WIFIA loan.
