MILITARY CHALLENGE

Take command of your energy future!

Base exchanges and commissaries have joined ENERGY
STAR® OPERATION CHANGE OUT- THE MILITARY
CHALLENGE! The Army Air Force Exchange Service
(AAFES), Marine Corps Exchange, Navy Exchange Service
Command (NEXCOM), and the Coast Guard Exchange as well
as the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) will all be
promoting OPERATION CHANGE OUT Look for OPERATION
CHANGE OUT posters by CFL displays in nearly 500
participating exchanges and commissaries. Exchanges and
commissaries already carry a wide variety of CFLs including
multipacks and specialty bulbs, such as three-way and
dirnmable models.

OPERATION CHANGE OUT is a jointly sponsored effort of the
United States Department of Defense and the United States

Department of Energy. OPERATION CHANGE OUT challenges servicemen and women and their families to save
energy, money, and protect the environment by replacing their inefficient, incandescent light bulbs with ENERGY
STAR qualified models.

OPERATION CHANGE OUT offers significant savings potential within military housing. Changing just one
incandescent light bulb to an ENERGY STAR qualified light bulb in every on-base housing unit in the U.S. would:

•	Save 62.1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity over the life of the
bulbs, representing enough energy to light about 32,000 homes for
a year;

•	Cut nearly $7 million in energy costs over the life of the bulbs,
enough money to purchase more than a dozen mine-resistant,
ambush-protected armored vehicles; and

•	Prevent the emissions of more than 95 million pounds of carbon
dioxide.

You can make a difference!

Visit www.enerqvstar.gov/OCQ for more information about OPERATION
CHANGE OUT, including a list of participating bases and how you can get
involved. Also available on the site is a toolkit featuring:

•	Event-planning and promotional tips

•	Highlights from other participating bases

•	ENERGY STAR light bulb information

•	Much more!

The achievements of individual bases will be monitored—and celebrated. Bases demonstrating exemplary, verifiable
results and outstanding promotional activities may also be eligible for national ENERGY STAR recognition. The
results will be announced on ENERGY STAR Change a Light Day, October 1, 2008.

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency,
helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy-efficient products and practices.

A BRIGHT IDEA!

ENERGY STAR qualified bulbs:

•	Use about 75 percent less
energy than standard
incandescent bulbs and last
up to 15 times longer.

•	Save about $30 or more in
energy costs over each
bulb's lifetime.

•	Produce about 75 percent
less heat, so they're safer to
operate and can cut energy
costs associated with home
cooling.
