Small Business Innovation Research Program Highlights January 12, 2022 Announcements NEXT EPA SBIR SOLICITATION ANTICIPATED OPENING: June 2022 9 U.S. Small Businesses Receive EPA SBIR Phase II Funding EPA announced nearly $3.6 million in funding for SBIR Phase II contracts with 9 U.S. small businesses as part of Phase II of the SBIR Program. Recipients of Phase II SBIR funding receive up to $400,000 to further develop and commercialize their innovative environmental technologies. This year's Phase II recipients are focused on addressing issues including PFAS destruction, ethylene oxide monitoring, water reuse, and sustainable construction materials. EPA Awards Nearly $3.1 Million in Phase I SBIR Funding to U.S. Small Businesses EPA announced nearly $3.1 million in funding for 31 contracts with small businesses as part of Phase I of the SBIR Program. Recipients of Phase I SBIR funding receive up to $100,000 to develop their novel environmental technologies for marketplace. This year's Phase I recipients are providing innovative solutions to environmental challenges including water reuse, methane emission monitoring, viral contamination, and low embodied carbon materials. Phase I: Phase I awards are $100,000 for six months for "proof of concept" of the technology. Phase II: Phase II awards are up to $400,000 for two years to further develop and commercialize the technology. Phase II companies thai obtain qualifying third-party investments are eligible for a commercialization option of $100,000. EPA Announces Companies Crushing Pollution Video Challenge EPA recently launched the Companies Crushing Pollution Video Challenge. This challenge invites applicants to use the TRI P2 Search Tool to identify a TRI facility that has reported implementing source reduction practices and make a video illustrating how those practices or techniques benefit and positively impact communities and the environment. Winners will receive awards of up to $5,000. Submissions for this opportunity are due March 1, 2022. Learn more here. SBIR Small Business Spotlight MicroAeth Labs, an EPA SBIR Phase II small business out of California, has been collaborating with University of Utah to further test and commercialize their innovative technology- an integrated black carbon and carbon dioxide sensor platform for real-time emission identification and analysis. Several of MicroAeth's black carbon monitors have been deployed in Salt Lake City. Read more about the project their technology is supporting here.
