The Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) program accelerates investment in our nation's water infrastructure by providing long-term, low-cost supplemental loans for regionally and nationally significant projects. WATER INFRASTRUCTURE REHABILITATION PROJECT BORROWER: City of Baltimore LOCATION: Baltimore, Maryland WIFIA LOAN AMOUNT: $192.7 million TOTAL WIFIA PROJECT COSTS: $410.6 million POPULATION SERVED BY PROJECT: 1.8 million people NUMBER OF JOBS CREATED: 1,313 jobs PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Baltimore City Department of Public Works' Water Infrastructure Rehabilitation Project proactively modernizes existing infrastructure to ensure the long-term operability of the system. It will reduce water main breaks by replacing over 2.5 percent of water mains in less than two years. As a result, the system will be more reliable and resilient to the effects of climate change. Consistent with the city's Equitable Action Plan, which ensures fairly apportioned funding across the service area, historically underserved communities will directly benefit from these projects. PROJECT BENEFITS • Ensures long-term reliability of the water distribution system for 1.8 million residents. • Proactively rehabilitates and replaces aging infrastructure. • Saves Baltimore City Department of Public Works an estimated $40.4 million by financing with a WIFIA loan.
