Continues Under GLRI

Spirit Lake GLLA Remediation and Restoration Project Update
Duluth, Minnesota	October 2022

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and United States Steel
Corporation (USS) have partnered to clean up impacted sediment and soil in
the Spirit Lake area of the St. Louis River in Duluth, Minnesota south of
Morgan Park. The cleanup began in Fall 2020 and will continue through 2023.

2022 Completed and Ongoing Work

Dredging of impacted sedimentfrom the
Shallow Sheltered Bay (SSB) (see map, left)

Capping in the Wire Mill offshore and
Unnamed Creek offshore areas was
completed in June 2022, Capping is
ongoing in the SSB over the dredged
surface.

The Delta Upland Cap is being constructed
adjacent to the SSB. The cap area will
support recreational features designed in
coordination with the City of Duluth.

Dredged material was placed into
Geotubes ® within the Upland Confined
Disposal Facility (CDF).

Debris from the SSB shoreline area was
removed by mechanical dredging.

Placement of rockfor shoreline protection
is ongoing along select sections of
shoreline within the project area.

2022	Upcoming Work

•	Capping will be completed in the SSB. Wire Mill
Pond and Unnamed Pond.

•	Rock will be placed along the Shallow Sheltered Bay
to protect the shoreline.

•	The Delta Upland Cap will be completed.

•	Pedestrian Trail constmction will begin.

•	A new railroad bridge will be constructed at Unnamed
Creek and the railroad bridge at Wire Mill Pond will
be improved.

2023	Work Activities

•	During the spring and summer of 2023,
habitat restoration planting will occur in
upland and m-water portions of the site.

•	Construction of the pedestrian trail will
be completed.

Project Outreach

•	The informational kiosks at the Morgan Park
Community Center and at the 88th Avenue West and
Idaho Street site entrance have been updated with
current project information.
