I Jk; | Brownfields 2006 Assessment Grant Fact Sheet Wadley, GA EPA Brownfields Program EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, communities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. On January 11, 2002, President George W. Bush signed into law the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act. Under the Brownfields Law, EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants. Additionally, funding support is provided to state and tribal response programs through a separate mechanism. Community Description The City of Wadley was selected to receive a brownfields assessment grant. Located in Jefferson County, Wadley (population 2,088) is a rural, federally designated Enterprise Community. Many potentially contaminated sites in Wadley are located along rural roads or in the city's primary economic areas, and are abandoned properties used for light industrial and commercial activities, including gas stations, manufacturing facilities, and machine and agriculture shops. Minorities comprise 80.1 percent of the population, and the unemployment rate is 15.2 percent. The median household income in the city is less than half the state level, and 40.2 percent of residents live below the poverty level. Because of the large amount of greenspace in Wadley, brownfields are often overlooked for development opportunities. Brownfields redevelopment is expected to create employment and entrepreneurial opportunities, eliminate blight, increase tax revenue, and improve the quality of life for citizens. Assessment Grant $200,000 for petroleum EPA has selected the City of Wadley for a brownfields assessment grant. Petroleum grant funds will be used to perform approximately ten Phase I and five Phase II environmental site assessments, develop cleanup plans, and conduct community outreach activities.
