Community Update #73 Pompton Lakes Study Area Pompton Lakes, New Jersey Pompton Lake Dredging Community Update March 2018 EPA CLEANUP ACTIVITIES Basic Site Information—2018 The scope of work in 2018 involves placement of the eco-layer in the Island Area and the ABD as well as site restoration. Hydraulic dredging, processing and off-site disposal of sediment containing mainly mercury and lead in a 36-acre area within Pompton Lake called the Acid Brook Delta (ABD) is complete. The work will be performed by The Chemours Company FC, LLC., through its contractor, Sevenson Environmental Services with EPA/ NJDEP oversight. EPA's 73rd update is to inform the community of the progress of activities related to the dredging performed on the 36-acre portion of the Pompton Lake Study Area known as the Acid Brook Delta (ABD). EPA is resum- ing the use of this format for providing a status update as the level of activity for this season '.s work is about to increase. Activities performed (week of March 19th): ~ Continued demobilization/disassembly of equipment. ~ Load and off-site transport one truck of dredged material residual that resulted from the demobilization/disassembly of equipment. ~ Continued mobilization of equipment associated with the next phase of work—ecological layer placement. ~ Initiated mechanical placement of initial 2-inch lift (second lift of 4 inches provides the total 6-inch layer of ecological material) of ecologi- cal material along the shoreline in the southeastern portion of the ABD. ~ Turbidity/dust/mercury monitoring completed for dredging — data on web site: (www. pomptonlakesworks. com/pompton-lake-proj ect/ environmental-monitoring). ~ Turbidity/dust monitoring in progress for ecological layer placement/ restoration—data posted on aforementioned website. Activities scheduled (week of March 26th): ~ Complete demobilization/disassembly of equipment. ~ Complete mobilization of equipment and materials for placement of ecological layer. ~ Continue placement of ecological layer along shoreline of ABD. ~ Continue routine inspection of site work areas per approved permits and for safety purposes. ~ Continue turbidity/dust monitoring. Note: HYDRAULIC AND MECHANICAL DREDGING ARE COMPLETE. INCLEMENT WEATHER CONSTRAINED PROGRESS THIS WEEK. THIS PHASE OF WORK IS "CLEAN" WORK MEANING THAT THE PLACEMENT OF THE ECOLOGICAL LAYER AND SITE RESTORATION DO NOT INVOLVE THE HANDLING OR TRANSPORT OF CONTAMINATED SEDIMENT. THERE WILL BE INCREASED TRUCK TRAFFIC DURING THIS PHASE DUE TO THE DELIVERY OF ECOLOGICAL MATERIAL (i.e. SAND). TRAFFIC CONTROLS WILL BE IN PLACE. ------- |
