The 2024 SmartWay Excellence Awards program for shippers and freight
carriers is a recognition program of the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency's (EPA) SmartWay Transport Partnership. SmartWay is a market-
driven public-private partnership that helps companies benchmark
freight performance, make informed decisions that drive sustainabLe
suppLy chains, aims to reduce emissions and fosters the development of
a cleaner and more efficient freight suppLy chain.
Through the SmartWay Excellence Award program, EPA recognizes
Leading shippers, and freight carriers that are optimizing the
environmental performance and efficiency of their freight operations,
whiLe serving as roLe models for other businesses to foLLow. This year
we are recognizing 47 companies (18 shippers and 29 truck carriers)
with a 2024 SmartWay Excellence Award, This represents about the
top one to two percent of all SmartWay Partners.
The 2024 SmartWay Award recognition is based on Partners
demonstrating superior performance using SmartWay's second
generation environmental assessment system for transportation suppLy
chains, This enhanced system includes a fulL suite of performance-
based SmartWay Tools and benchmarking software that enabLe
each SmartWay Partner to compLete a thorough assessment of its
goods movement and freight activity. Partners also receive a set of
comprehensive and detaiLed reports on their company's environmental
performance and operational efficiency.
EPA identified the top 2024 SmartWay Excellence Award recipients
from among aLl shippers and carrier businesses that participate in
SmartWay, are partners in good standing and that provided prior-year
performance data to EPA using SmartWay Tools.
Candidates in SmartWay's shipper category were evaluated based
on their impact, size and commitment to using high-performing
SmartWay freight carriers. In 2024, eligible shippers were partners
in good standing that used primary data to compLete their
annual SmartWay shipper performance benchmarking
tooLs, The selected candidates achieved a superior Level
of environmental performance and the highest Level of
efficiency within SmartWay by demonstrating that they
ship more goods per mile, more efficiently, using higher-
performing SmartWay carrier partners, Recognition of the top shipper companies (retaiLers
and manufacturers) is aLso comprised of freight sustainability Leadership actions and achievements in freight
emissions accounting, disclosure, and sustainability achievements; best practices resuLting in operational
excellence; stakeholder collaboration; and integrated freight management,
Candidates in SmartWay's freight carrier category were evaluated based on their efficiency and environmental
performance in moving products and merchandise. In 2024, eligible carriers included Large, medium and small
companies that are partners in good standing within key business sectors, incLuding; truckLoad, Less-than-
truckLoad, refrigerated, tanker, flatbed, drayage, mixed, buLk/heavy and intermodal. Within these respective
fleet characterizations and based on their size, these carriers achieved a superior LeveL of environmental

performance and the highest Level, of efficiency within SmartWay by demonstrating that they carry more goods
per ton-miLe, using Less fueLand emitting fewer greenhouse gas and air poLLutant emissions. Recognition of
the top truck carriers is aLso comprised of freight sustainabiLity Leadership actions and achievements in freight
emissions accounting, discLosure, and sustainabiLity achievements; technoLogy innovation, best practices
resuLting in operationaLexceLLence; stakehoLder collaboration; and integrated freight management.
SMARTWAY CARRIER COMPANY AWARDS
The 2024 SmartWay Excellence Award for carriers' honor Partners
that are moving goods efficiently, with the lowest levels of CO2,
PM and NOx emissions reported among all other SmartWay
Partners. SmartWay Award winners within the carrier category
can include companies that operate one or more of the following
thirteen fleet types: truckload, less-than-truckload, refrigerated,
package, specialized, expedited, tanker, flatbed, mixed, dray,
heavy-haul, auto-carrier, and moving. SmartWay carrier Award
winners were selected using environ-'mental and efficiency
benchmarks that included CO2, PM and NOx emissions measured
in grams per ton-mile. These benchmarks were unique to each of
the thirteen fleet types character-ized by SmartWay.
Fleet size and impact were other factors considered. SmartWay's
2024 carrier Award winners represent large, medium and small
fleets, as defined by the number of miles traveled. Carriers with
miles traveled greater than or equal to one percent (0.75 percent
for truckload dry van) of the total number of miles traveled by all
SmartWay Partners falling within the same fleet type are large
carriers, while carriers with less than 0.25 percent are considered
small carriers. Truckload dry van carriers with miles traveled that
are 0.25 to 0.75 percent of the total miles traveled by all SmartWay
Partners falling in the same fleet type are medium carriers
Within the carrier category, EPA proudly recognizes 29 truck
carriers as recipients of the 2024 SmartWay Excellence Award.
These high-performing carriers are being recognized for their
achievement in finding ways to move more goods, more ton-
miles, using less fuel and emitting fewer emissions. They are
SmartWay's top performing carrier partners and include large,
medium and small carriers that serve as role models for other
businesses to follow. This year, three truck carriers Schneider, Swift
Transportation Co of Arizona LL, and Werner Enterprises) were
recognized in multiple fleet categories.
CARRIER AWARD WINNERS
EPA selected these 29 SmartWay truck carrier Award winners
because they are the industry leaders and top environmental
performers in their individual categories. EPA identified large,
medium and small carriers with the best freight efficiency ratings
in numerous fleet categories based on the selection criteria
available here: SmartWay 2024 Award Criteria (PDF) (2 pp, 326.3
KB, February 2024, EPA-420-F-24-011). These truck carriers were
selected from part of a larger pool of semifinalist candidates
to demonstrate leadership actions that support SmartWay
environmental goals. The Award winners were selected by
EPA based on their achievements in the areas of freight
emissions accounting, disclosure, and sustainability
achievements; technology innovation, best practices resulting
in operational excellence; stakeholder collaboration; and
integrated freight management.
Truck Load/Dry Van Carrier Fleet Award Winners
Truckload carriers generally dedicate their trailers to a single shipper's cargo and typically fill an entire trailer with large amounts of
homogeneous cargo.
Large SmartWay truckload dry van carrier Award winners include: Covenant Transport, Crete Carrier Corporation, Knight Transportation,
Inc., Mesilla Valley Transportation, Schneider, Swift Transportation Co. of Arizona, LLC, and Werner Enterprises (Werner is recognized in
both Dedicated and One-Way Van categories).

SMARTWAY SHIPPER PARTNER AWARDS
The 2024 SmartWay Excellence Award for shippers honor
Partners that are helping build a market for clean and efficient
freight transportation by shipping virtually all of their products
and merchandise (98 percent of miles or ton-miles) with high-
performing SmartWay carriers. SmartWay shipper Award winners
also were selected based on achieving superior environmental
and efficiency benchmarks among all other SmartWay Partners.
These performance benchmarks for shipper Partners were
derived through an assessment of their carriers' carbon dioxide
(CO2), particulate matter (PM), and nitrogen oxide (NOx)
emissions measured in grams per mile.
EPA proudly recognizes 18 of its shippers as recipients of a 2024
SmartWay Excellence Award. These shipper Award winners are
congratulated for their achievements in choosing to work with
high-performing SmartWay freight carriers and finding ways to
move more goods, more ton-miles using less fuel and emitting
fewer emissions. They are SmartWay's top performing shipper
partners and include large, medium and small firms that move a
broad range of products and merchandise.

EPA selected these 18 SmartWay shipper Award recipients because they are the top environmental performers and industry leaders.
These shippers were selected from part of a larger pool of semifinalist candidates using the SmartWay 2024 Award Criteria (PDF) (2 pp,
326.3 KB, February 2024, EPA-420-F-24-011).. The semifinalists competed in large, medium and small mileage categories to demonstrate
leadership actions that support SmartWay environmental goals. This year EPA is also distinguishing the Shipper Awardees by multiple
industry sectors including Retail, Consumer Goods, Food and Beverage, Industrial Manufacturing, Limited-Service Restaurants, and
Lumber and Paper. The Award winners were selected by EPA based on their achievements in the areas of freight emissions accounting,
