Current Investigation Activities
• May 14-25: Completed installation and de-
velopment of the monitoring wells north of the
1-20 corridor as shown on the attached map.
• June 4-15: Sampling of private water wells to
assess changes in the chromium contamina-
tion.
• June 11 - 22: Sampling of new and existing
monitoring wells to provide data on the extent
of chromium contamination.
• August: Receipt of all validated sampling data
from the EPA laboratories.
Past Actions
• EPA completed sampling of the private water
supply wells in November 2010, April 2011,
and May 2011. This sampling data was used
to update the chromium plume boundary and
identify potential monitoring well locations.
• The first round of monitoring well installation
was completed in May 2011, and included 21
monitoring well couplets installed across the
area of the chromium contamination, includ-
ing a potential source area identified by the
Texas Commission on Environmental Quality
(TCEQ).
• EPA completed sampling of the new monitor-
ing wells the week of June 20, 2011.
• A second round of monitoring well installa-
tion was completed in December 2011 and fo-
cused on the presence of chromium in the
ground water immediately north of the Inter-
state 20 corridor. Six well locations were
completed along the service road easement on
the north side of 1-20.
• The new monitoring wells, and a few of the
existing monitoring wells, were sampled in
January 2012. Samples were analyzed for total
metals and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs).
The chromium data from the January 2012
sampling is presented in purple below the
number of the well in the figure in this fact
sheet.
Site Background
The West County Road 112 Ground Water Site
(Site) is a ground water plume of chromi-
um/hexavalent chromium. The center of the Site
is designated as 2601 West County Road 112,
which is located in a rural area of Midland Coun-
ty, Texas. The Site is located to the southwest of
the city limits of Midland, Texas. The Site plume
currently extends 1 Vi miles southeast from the
center of the Site and is situated under approxi-
mately 260 acres.
The Site was identified in April 2009 by a local
resident who asked the TCEQ to test the private
well due to yellow discoloration. Sampling of this
well revealed the presence of 5,280 micrograms
per liter (or parts per billion) of chromium.
The TCEQ has installed treatment systems on
wells that have been identified with chromium
concentrations exceeding the drinking water
standard of 100 micrograms per liter. TCEQ is
providing the systems and maintenance at no cost
to the residents.
An Expanded Site Investigation was conducted in
February 2010, and no sources were identified.
The Site is being evaluated as a ground water
plume of chromium/hexavalent chromium with no
identified source.
The EPA published a rule in the Federal Register
on March 10, 2011, placing the West County
-------
Road 112 Ground Water Plume Site on its Na-
tional Priorities List (NPL). The NPL is EPA's list
of uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste
sites.
