Lindane

Chemical Information:

Alternate Names - Hexachlorocyclohexane, gamma-

General Uses - Lindane was mainly used on fruit and vegetable crops to kill insects. It also was used
as an ingredient in ointments that help cure head lice, body lice, and scabies. It has not been made in the
United States since 1977, but it may still be imported into the country and formulated. Only individuals
who are certified may use this chemical.

From 2000-2005, no more than two facilities reported lindane. Lindane has not been reported since 2003, when
one facility reported 71 pounds. Since 2001, the largest quantity of 183 pounds was reported in 2002- by two
facilities (Exhibit 4.95).

Since 2001, only two facilities in two states reported lindane (Exhibit 4.96). A facility located in Owyhee
County, Idaho reported lindane from 2001 to 2003. Another facility, located in Grand Forks County, North
Dakota only reported lindane for 2002.

Since 2001, two facilities, both in SIC 2879 (Pesticides and agricultural chemicals, nec) reported lindane
(Exhibit 4.97). These facilities had used lindane as a feed treatment; however, they phased out its use.

From 2001 to 2003, facilities primarily treated or recycled lindane. In the last year (2003) for which lindane was reported, the one reporting facility
treated 71 pounds of lindane and recycled 179 pounds onsite (Exhibits 4.98 and 4.99).
