Detroit Exposure and Aerosol Research Study Why is the U.S. EPA studying air quality in Detroit? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is conducting the Detroit Exposure and Aerosol Research Study. EPA performs research to protect human health and the environment. In order for EPA to develop the best air quality standards to make the air safer, we need to understand what is in the air that you breathe. Who can be in the study? Participant selections will begin in the summer of 2004. Only 40 participants will be selected per year. Participants must be: 18 years or older and live in one of the seven monitoring areas v' a non-smoker and live in a non-smoking household v able to walk around indoors and outdoors freely willing to answer questions and complete surveys which will be conducted in English v planning to live in the same single family and detached home for the next 12 months during the sampling period Why is it important for me to participate in As a participant in this study, you will play a critical role in helping scientists and researchers understand your community's exposure to various pollutants and where those pollutants come from. You will also get a summary of select pollutant measurements associated with your involvement at the end of the monitoring season upon request. Will I get compensated for participating? Yes! Those who participate in both the summer and winter seasons will receive up to $300 and $100 gift certificate. Summer: $125 for 5 days plus a $50 gift certificate.
