A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act was passed to help states and communities around the country cleanup and revitalize brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants. Additionally, funding support is provided to state and tribal response programs through a separate mechanism. Cleanup Grants $348,204 for hazardous substances EPA has selected the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department for two brownfields cleanup grants. Hazardous substances grant funds will be used to clean up Parcels 3A and 3B at the 900 Innes property, which was historically a boat building and repair facility. Parcel 3A is the site of the Shipwright's Cottage, which was a residential unit from 1875 to 1961, and then served as a boat yard office. It is contaminated with metals and inorganic contaminants. Parcel 3B was a boat building and repair facility for 120 years, particularly through the era of marine-based cargo transportation in the city, and was most recently used for construction equipment storage. The ,8-acre site is contaminated with heavy metals such as nickel, zinc, and copper; and biocides. Grant funds for both sites also will be used to conduct environmental monitoring and support community outreach activities.
