Community Update #19 Pompton Lakes Study Area Pompton Lakes, New Jersey Upland Soil Areas Excavation/Dredging Community Update September 2016 EPA CLEANUP ACTIVITIES Basic Site Information The Upland Soil Areas excavation is complete with the exception of one small area (Area Al) totaling ap- proximately 20 cubic yards (CY). Work is being performed by Sevenson Environmental Services, Inc., a contractor for The Chemours Company FC, LLC (Chemours) with EPA/NJDEP oversight. ACTIVITIES—WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 26TH ~ Transported/disposed of 733 loads of impacted material (excavated soil/dredged sediment) a/o September 29th ~ Completed mechanical dredging of access channel ~ Processed/staged impacted sediment for off-site disposal ~ Excavation of Uplands Soil Area Al (small area approx. 20 CY), began with trees obstructing excavation cut to ground level ~ Continued perimeter monitoring—data on website (http:// www.pomptonlakesworks.com/pompton-lake-project/ environmental-monitoring/ ~ No exceedances of dust/ mercury vapor/turbidity action levels during monitoring associated with site activities UPCOMING ACTIVITIES—WEEK OF OCTOBER 3RD ~ Set-up for mechanical dredging of the Island Area including installation of turbidity curtain and fish relocation ~ Continue processing/loading/ disposal of dredged sediment ~ Continue assessment/testing of water from dredged sediment to determine treatment modifications ~ Continue planning to further address Area Al excavation ~ Continued perimeter monitoring of dust/mercury/turbidity levels ADDITIONAL NOTES: ~ Chemours sent a letter to approximately 20 residences in prox- imity to the Island Area and Area A informing them of upcom- ing dredging activities. ~ Chemours forwarded a proposed modification to NJDEP regard- ing the permit to discharge treated water from the impacted sedi- ment. No treated water will be discharged until the proposed modification to the NJDEP permit is reviewed/approved.
