Upland Soil Areas Excavation/Dredging

Community Update	May 2016

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is issuing this
update to inform the community of the startup of a major phase
of environmental clean-up related to the Pompton Lakes Works
Site (Site). The work involves a component of the Pompton
Lakes Study Area known as the Upland Soil Area. Specifically,
the initial phase includes excavation of approximately 3,160 cu-
bic yards of impacted soil containing mercury, lead and other
metals. There will be no soil excavation until the Lakeside Mid-
dle School is closed for the summer. Any work conducted before
the Lakeside Middle School is closed for the summer is in prep-
aration for the actual excavation activities.

The project site for this phase includes Rotary Park, the wood-
lands adjacent to and west of Rotary Park that includes Acid
Brook (south of Lakeside Ave) and, the area along the south side
of Lakeside Avenue moving east to the Lakeside Avenue Park.
The work is being conducted by Sevenson Environmental Ser-
vices, Inc., a contractor for The Chemours Company FC, LLC
(Chemours) with oversight by EPA and the New Jersey Depart-
ment of Environmental Protection.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY

Between May 25th and June 3th, planned activities include in-
stallation of a temporary construction fence around the project
site, removal of Rotary Park amenities, clearing and tree remov-
al, installation of soil erosion measures, land surveying and lay-
out of traffic control measures. Residents in proximity of the
work area and parents/teachers/staff of Lakeside Middle School
should expect an increase in truck traffic as well as the presence
of construction personnel and equipment at the project site.
Chemours will also provide notification about these activities.

GOING FORWARD

EPA intends to provide frequent updates to the community as
the project progresses. Information will also be posted on the
EPA's and the Borough's website. Chemours will also have a
website accessible to the community to view the progress of the
environmental cleanup, including monitoring data. Please uti-
lize the information in the shaded box to the left to contact EPA
with any questions or concerns.
