Brownfields Success Story BEFORE EPA Grant Recipient: City of Hopewell, Virginia Grant Type: EPA Brownfield Assessment Former Uses: Upscale Restaurant/Event Space EPA 560-F-24-001 Former Restaurant. Site was vacant between 2005 and 2018. Current Use: &EPA United States Environmental Protection Agency AT CITY POINT Celebrate One Bite at A Time (Hopewell, VA) The City of Hopeweii received Brownfield Redevelopment Grant Funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to facilitate redevelopment of a former commercial building located on a bluff overlooking the confluence of the Appomattox and James Rivers. Grant funds were used to conduct a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment of the property to identify environmental impacts from past uses of the site, allowing the building to be redeveloped into an up-scale restaurant with breathtaking views of the rivers. Site improvements include renovation of the building, and construction of an updated parking area that meets new stormwater development standards. The City/developer budget for purchase and re-development was approximately $3.75 million. The City estimates over 100 jobs have been created. The City is now poised to take the next step and link property along the riverfront from the nearby City owned Marina to the Historic Downtown area. The River Walk trail in the City of Hopewell, will be part of a larger 22 mile Riverwalk Trail being spearheaded by the Friends of the Lower Appomattox River. THE BOATHOUSE ------- |
