Upland Soil Areas Excavation/Dredging

Community Update	October 2016

This is EPA's 22nd update to inform the community of the progress
of activities related to the portion of the Pompton Lakes Study Area
known as the Upland Soil Areas and the 3 acres of the lake
(designated Area A and the Island Area) that will be mechanically
dredged. Work is being performed by Sevenson Environmental Ser-
vices, Inc., on behalf of The Chemours Company FC, LLC
(Chemours) with EPA/NJDEP oversight.

ACTIVITIES—WEEK OF OCTOBER 17th

~	Transported/disposed of 946 loads of impacted material
(excavated soil/dredged sediment) a/o October 20th

~	Continued mechanical dredging of Island Area

~	Processed/staged impacted sediment for off-site disposal

~	Continued working on treatment modifications to NJDEP permit
with no discharge until approvals secured/lab testing completed

~	Continued perimeter monitoring—data on website (http://

environmental-monitoring/

~	No exceedances of dust/ mercury vapor/turbidity action levels
during monitoring associated with site activities

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES—WEEK OF OCTOBER 24th

~	Continue mechanical dredging of the Island Area

~	Continue processing/loading/ disposal of dredged sediment

~	Commence discharge of treated water from dredged sediment
per NJDEP-approved permit modification and receipt of lab re-
sults

~	Continue to further assess Area A1 excavation in Uplands Area

~	Continued perimeter monitoring of dust/mercury/turbidity levels

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

~	Chemours received approvals for a permit modification re-
configuring their treatment process to include chemical
treatment to address liquid from the de-watered sediment.

~	Laboratory analysis of the water treated via the reconfig-
ured treatment process that now includes chemical treat-
ment indicates the treated water will not exceed the NJDEP
permit levels.

~	The project remains on schedule.

EPA CLEANUP ACTIVITIES

Basic Site Information

The Upland Soil Areas excavation is

complete with the exception of one
small area (Area Al) totaling ap-
proximately 20 cubic yards (CY).
Mechanical dredging of approxi-
mately 19,300 CY of impacted sedi-
ment (containing mercury/lead/other
metals) in Area A and the Island
Area is in progress.
