Spartan Chemical Co.

Wyoming, Mich.

Site Description

EPA added the five-acre Spartan Chemical Co. site to the National Priorities List in 1983. From
1952-91, Spartan operated a chemical plant at the site, located in Wyoming, Mich. Large quantities
of various hazardous liquid chemicals were produced and stored there, and some of the toxic
byproducts were disposed of through discharges that entered the groundwater and contaminated
local wells. The area around the site contains industrial, commercial and residential properties, and
is heavily populated.

Current Site Status and Cleanup Actions to Date

•	In 2011, EPA issued a site-wide cleanup plan, which includes installation of a water supply
line from the City of Odessa; the line will be extended to homes and businesses with private
water supply wells currently or potentially affected by the groundwater contamination.

•	The cleanup plan also calls for a second remedy component involving enhanced natural
degradation and installation of a groundwater extraction and treatment system.

•	The third remedy component includes installation of a soil vapor extraction system to remove
residual contamination.

•	Once this project is funded and completed, all unacceptable human exposure pathways will
be eliminated for the entire site.

Unfunded Action

Fiscal Year 2012 work that was not funded involved installation of the water supply line, groundwater
extraction and treatment system, soil vapor extraction and in situ reductive dechlorination.

Current Funding Status

To date, EPA has spent approximately $1.7 million on response construction work at the site.
