Grants Chlorinated Solvents Plume Site (GCSP)

Grants, New Mexico

Site Description

The GCSP Site consists of an area of contaminated ground water
containing chlorinated solvents at concentrations greater than EPA
drinking water standards or maximum contaminant levels (MCLs). The
presence of chlorinated solvents in ground water at the GCSP Site is a
result of releases from dry cleaning operations.

Chlorinated ethenes, principally tetrachloroethene (PCE), are present at
concentrations up to 50,000 micrograms per liter (|jg/L), which is 10,000-
times the MCL of 5 |jg/L. Volatilization from ground water leads to the
presence of chlorinated ethenes in soil vapor in close proximity to the
ground surface. Chlorinated ethenes have been found to accumulate
within indoor air of residential homes at concentrations exceeding action
levels.

Current Site Status and Cleanup Actions to Date

•	In 2006, EPA selected the final remedy for the site in the Record of
Decision (ROD).

•	In June 2008 EPA completed a one year long pilot study for the
selected ground water remedy at the Site. In-Situ Chemical Oxidation
(ISCO) and Enhanced Reductive Dechlorination (ERD) are two
technologies selected to remediate ground water at the Site. Currently
the EPA is designing the full scale remedy for the Site and expects to
complete the design by August 2009.

•	In October 2008, the EPA will begin installing vapor mitigation systems
(VIMS) in eleven homes located above the ground water plume. The
EPA is taking a proactive step in installing these systems in 8 out of the
11 homes planned for construction. The EPA expects to complete the
construction of the VIMS by December 2008.

Current Funding Status

•	In Fiscal Year 2008, EPA obligated approximately $ 486,000 for the
construction of vapor mitigation systems at this site.
