Green Infrastructure

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - Region 6

Stormwater Management

North Boulevard Town Square

Baton Rouge, Louisiana

The City of Baton Rouge has
constructed a walkable, pedestrian
safe, multi-use public space over an
existing under-utilized median. The
space maintains efficient circulation,
integrates sustainability and smart
growth principles, and stimulates
interest in the southern end of the
Arts & Entertainment District in
downtown Baton Rouge.

North Boulevard Town
Square is a key component
of revitalization efforts in
downtown Baton Rouge.

The design incorporates bioswales
along North Boulevard while
converting over one acre of street
pavement to pedestrian space. The
bioswales provide on-site storm
water retention during rain events
and eliminate the need to build
additional off-site water retention
facilities. It also filters the storm
water as it flows through the
vegetation and infiltrates into the
soil. Large green spaces and native
trees accent the historic buildings
and views of the Mississippi River.

The design for North Boulevard
Town Square incorporates
sustainable practices through the
extensive use of low-energy LED
lighting, stormwater management,
maximization of pervious surfaces
and green spaces, and preservation
and enhancement of the urban
forest canopy.
