Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund and Cleanup Grant Recipients Announced

EPA announced $10.2 million in new Brownfields grants to
Regions 8, 9, and 10 to assess, clean up and redevelop con-
taminated properties, boost local economies and create jobs
while protecting public health. The 27 western region grant-
ees include communities in ten states, funded by EPA's
Brownfields Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund (RLF), and
Cleanup (ARC) grants and RLF Supplemental Grants. View

Multi-Purpose Pilot and Environmental Workforce and Job Training Grants Announced

EPA announced over $1 million in grants to the western regions that can be used to assess and clean
up contaminated sites through a new multi-purpose grant approach. Recipients include Missoula
County, Montana; Mt. Shasta, California; and Astoria, Oregon. Through the Environmental Work-
force Development and Job Training (EWDJT) program, EPA will award $1 million to five recipients

•	Missoula. Montana, receives $679K for Brownfields cleanup

•	Dubois. Wyoming, receives $200.000 for sawmill site cleanup.

•	The Colfax Mainstreet Coalition received $900.000 to address
contamination on Lake₯/ood and Denver's Colfax Avenue.

•	Oregon local governments receive $2.1 million in Brownfields
assessment and revolving loan fund supplemental grants.

•	Utah receives $1.6 million to assess and clean up sites.

•	City of Wheat Ridge. Colorado, receives a $400.000 grant
to conduct assessments.

•	Three Arizona communities. Flagstaff. Yuma and the
White Mountain Apache Tribe, were awarded a total of
$1.3 million in EPA Brownfields grant funds.

•	$ 1.2 million will be split among the cities of San Francisco.

Emeryville. Chico and Grass Valley. California, to assess and clean up contaminated proper-
ties.

•	Two Washington local governments share $600.000 in cleanup and assessment EPA Brownfields
funding.

•	$1 million in supplemental Brownfields revolving loan funds will go to Humboldt County, the
City of Sacramento and California's Department of Toxic Substances Control for
cleanup.

•	EPA awards $200,000 to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe for cleanup of Smee School Teacher's
Facility in the Wakapala Community

•	EPA awards $200.000 to the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Tribe for cleanup .

Brownfields Progress: Ail Update from the Western Regions

•	Cleanup of a former oil drilling site in Los Angeles was completed by Little Tokyo
Service Center Community Development Corporation, a Brownfields grantee. In May,
they celebrated the groundbreaking of the Filipino Workers Center (PWC) Family
Housing project. When completed, PWC Family Housing will provide 45 total units of
affordable family housing, including nine units set aside for transition-age youth and 22
units for homeless individuals.

•	Development of the Pend d'Oreille Bay Trail in Northern Idaho makes significant
forward progress as project partners continue to secure funding. The 2-mile trail will

students, in Denver, Colorado, navigated through the Brownfields process.

The Denver Animal Shelter is the first animal shelter in the nation to receive the designa-
tion as platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED^ certified. Once a
sprawling 40-acre contaminated eyesore near downtown Denver, the former General
Chemical property is now home to an animal shelter and public works facility, both of
which are models for sustainable and efficient design. In 2010, the City and County of
Denver used a Recovery Act subgrant from the Brownfields loan fund to complete soil
cleanup.

The Denver Animal Shelter receives LEED platinum certification.
