Innovative Science for a Sustainable Future

The Office of Research and Development is
the scientific research arm of EPA. Its leading
-edge research informs Agency decisions
and supports the emerging needs of EPA
stakeholders, including the Agency's state,
tribal, and community partners.

ORD's work is organized into six national research
programs that identify the most pressing environmen-
tal health research needs in the United States. They
are:

•	Air, Climate, & Energy

•	Chemical Safety for Sustainability

•	Homeland Security

•	Health & Environmental Risk

•	Safe & Sustainable Water Resources

•	Sustainable & Healthy Communities

The research is conducted by ORD's five research
centers in 11 facilities.

The Office of Science Advisor, Policy, and En-
gagement supports the Agency's Science Advisor
and integrates and coordinates science across ORD
and the Agency, with key external partners, and into
the regulatory process.

The Center for Environmental Measurement and
Modeling conducts research to advance the
Agency's ability to measure and model contaminants
in the environment, including research to provide
fundamental methods and models needed to
implement environmental statutes.

The Center for Computational Toxicology and Ex-
posure works to support Agency decisions by provid-
ing solutions-driven research to rapidly evaluate the
potential human health and environmental risks due

to exposures to environmental chemicals and ensure
the integrity of the freshwater environment and its
capacity to support human well-being.

The Center for Public Health and Environmental
Assessment develops human health and environ-
mental assessments that support EPA program and
regional policies and decisions. The Center conducts
toxicological, clinical, ecological, epidemiological, and
citizen science studies to assess the impact of envi-
ronmental exposures to chemicals and other stress-
ors on healthy individuals, populations, and ecosys-
tems.

The Center for Environmental Solutions and
Emergency Response conducts customer-driven
research to improve decision making by EPA, federal,
state, tribal and local agencies, when faced with chal-
lenging environmental problems in the built environ-
ment.
