Site Name: Lackawanna Refuse Superfund Site
Size: 267 acres

Existing Site Infrastructure: The site is currently vacant and fenced. Caps cover three strip mine
cuts previously used for solid waste disposal. The electricity grid is accessible from the site.
Readiness for Reuse: EPA determined the site to have achieved the Sitewide Ready for
Anticipated Use performance measure in 2008.

Use Restrictions: Site use restrictions are in place to protect remedy components. Caps cover areas
of contaminated soil and disturbance of the caps or digging into site soils is prohibited without prior-
written approval from EPA. Groundwater may not be used for domestic purposes and no wells may
be installed on the property. Area homes are connected to the municipal water supply.

SETTING:

•	The site, totaling 267 acres, consists of five former
strip mine pits and surrounding lands. Previous site
owners used three of the former mine pits as permitted
municipal landfills during the 1970s.

•	Nearby lands are residential and forested areas. Site
surroundings include several houses to the south and
east, a residential neighborhood to the northeast, and
forest to the west. The current site property owner-
developed about 40 homes to the south/southeast of
the site.

•	Surrounding population: 0.5 mile, 278 people | 2.5 miles,
21,137 people | 4 miles, 47,767 people.

REMEDIAL STATUS:

•	Remedy construction tookplace between 1987 and 1991.

•	Cleanup involved removing waste and contaminated soil,
building a cap and diverting surface water.

•	In 1999, EPA issued a Close-Out Report stating that no
further work is necessary at the site and deleted the site
from the National Priorities List.

•	The site achieved the Sitewide Ready for Anticipated
Use performance measure in 2008.
