EPA Awards $2.5 Million to Small Businesses

EPA announced nearly $2.5 million in funding for 25 contracts
with small businesses as part of Phase I of the SBIR Program.
Recipients of Phase I funding receive up to $100,000 to develop
their environmental technologies for marketplace. This year's
Phase I recipients are providing innovative solutions to
environmental challenges including PFAS remediation in water
and soil, water reuse, air pollution monitoring and food waste

Cleaner Indoor Air During Wildfires Challenge Now Open

EPA and partners recently launched the Cleaner Indoor Air During
Wildfires Challenge. This challenge seeks innovative solutions for
reducing indoor air pollution due to wildfire smoke and high
pollution events that are effective, low-cost, quiet, and safe to
operate continuously. Finalists will receive awards of up to
$10,000. Submissions for this opportunity are due May 17.

Online SBIR Tutorials Available

Did you know SBIR.gov has online courses designed to help
interested parties learn more about the SBIR and Small Business
Technology Transfer (STTR) programs? Explore the online
tutorials here to learn more about the application process for
federal funding and the nuances of each agency's program.

SBIR Small Business Spotlight

ASAT Inc.. an EPA SBIR small business out of Oregon, was
awarded a 2020 Tibbetts Award which recognizes success and
excellence in the SBIR program. With EPA SBIR funding, ASAT
developed the Integrated Stove, a clean-burning cookstove that
can be used for cooking, home heating, and provide electricity for
lighting and charging small appliances. Since receiving their EPA
SBIR award, ASAT has attracted a partnership with the Gates-
funded Global Health Laboratories and secured additional funding
from third-party sources. ASAT products are now found in more

Program supports small businesses to
develop and commercialize novel
environmental technologies that
support this mission.

Phase I;

Phase I awards are $100,000 for six
months for "proof of concept' of the
technology.

Phase II:

Phase II awards are up to $400,000
for two years to further develop and
commercialize the technology. Phase
II companies that obtain qualifying
third-party investments are eligible
for a commercialization option of
$100,000.
