Green Infrdstructure U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - Region 6 Stormwater Management City Park Wetlands New Orleans, Louisiana n educational and interpretive wetland that provides a means of temporary stormwater detention was created at City Park in New Orleans, Louisiana. The wetlands are designed to have 6 to 12 inches of water at all times, with two 18 to 24 inch deep pools that allow pollutants to settle. Additional stormwater management benefits are realized through the use of pervious surface materials for the adjacent pedestrian trails. The design incorporates a variety of native wetland species. The native plant palette is not only crucial to the function of the wetlands, but is similar to the palette used throughout the park, adding to the continuity of the user experience. The banks of the wetlands are planted with upper riparian plant species that tolerate temporary inundation of water during large rain events. Native grasses and trees are planted at the top of the banks to create a smooth transition between the wetlands and park turf grasses. The wetland serves as an instructive and interactive addition to the park's many recreation and tourism options. Trails are designed to give the user access to all aspects of the wetland system, utilizing a wooden boardwalk that spans the deepest part. The estimated cost of the project is $120,000.
