SETTING:

The site is in a commercial and industrial area. It is zoned for light
manufacturing and commercial uses.

The site has multiple private owners.

Site surroundings include a New York State Thruway ramp and toll
plaza as well as the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport. A small
lake on site is used for fishing.

EPA's Superfund Redevelopment Program (SRP) provided technical
assistance to conduct a reuse assessment at the site in 2013. SRP
updated the site's reuse assessment in 2021. Updates include the
town of Cheektowaga's future use vision for the site, including solar
reuse on capped areas and transportation uses along roadways.

Within a 1-mile radius of the site, 37% of the population is unemployed.

Surrounding population: 1 mile, 2,539 people; 3 miles, 59,533
people; 5 miles, 174,364 people

CLEANUP STATUS:

Landfilling operations resulted in soil, sediment, surface water and
groundwater contamination at the site.

EPA added the site to the Superfund program's National Priorities
List (NPL) in 1994. After cleanup, EPA removed the site from the
NPL in 2008.

Cleanup activities included removing on-site drums, constructing
a cap and containment system, and a leachate collection and
treatment system.

EPA's cleanup plan anticipated reuse by building landfill areas
with a large setback from the road with space to accommodate new
buildings and infrastructure.

Cleanup was completed in 2002. Operation and maintenance
activities are ongoing.

EPA conducts Five-Year Reviews at the site to ensure the site is
protective of human health and the environment.
