The goal of the Collaborative is to leverage federal funds to strategically reduce emissions from the most polluting diesel sources in impacted
communities. The Collaborative seeks to improve air quality and public health by targeting the highest polluting engines with the most cost-effective
control strategies.

Tribal DERA 2020:

Kawerak Inc. - Diesel
Generator Emissions
Improvement Project in the
community of Diomede,
Alaska

Under the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA), the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded
Kawerak Inc., a $155,000 Tribal DERA grant with Fiscal
Year 2020 DERA funding. The grant will be used to
replace the existing generator with a Tier 2 marine gen-
set in the powerplant and update the switchgear in
Diomede, Alaska. The FY20 project will be implemented
with a mandatory cost share of $101,600; a voluntary
cost-share of $148,304; for a total project cost of
$404,904.

What is the Project?

Kawerak Inc., will work with the Diomede community in Alaska to
remove their existing Tier 2 stationary generator and replace it with a
Tier 3 marine gen-set in the powerplant and update the manual
switchgear.

Why is this Project Important?

automated switchgear system will ensure the most efficient gen-set
and automatic switchgear to reduce diesel emissions and improve air
quality in the Diolmede community.

What are the Estimated Environmental
Benefits?

Kawerak Inc. and the Diomede community anticipates significant
reductions in diesel emissions based on EPA's verified emission
reduction estimations, using the Diesel Emission Quantifier. The
FY2020 gen-set and switchgear replacement will reduce diesel
emissions both annual / lifetime from NOx by 1,155 I 10,460 tons,
PM2.5 by 0.063 / .572 tons; HC by .098 / .890 tons; CO by 0.0 / 0.0;
and C02 by 18.9 I 39.0 tons. Fuel usage reduction in Diomede by
1,989 gallons annually.

How is this Project Funded?

The West Coast Collaborative is a partnership between leaders from
federal, tribal, state, and local government, the private sector, and
environmental groups committed to reducing diesel emissions along
the West Coast and is part of EPA Clean Diesel Program.
