REMOVAL ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES The EPA is conducting soil assessment activities at the North Little Rock Auto Salvage Site, known to the community as the "old mill". The Site was the location of a vermiculite processing facility. The vermiculite processed at this facility was contami- nated with asbestos from Libby, Montana. Asbestos in outdoor soil or other source material is not inhe- rently hazardous, unless the asbestos is released from the source material into air where it can be breathed. As part of its assessment activities, EPA has been looking at nearby locations where asbestos may have moved either through air deposition or through use as fill. EPA sampled several residences and the June 2012 southern portion of Conley Park as part of this as- sessment. Conley Park is within a half mile of the former vermiculite processing facility. CURRENT ACTIONS Sample results identified a small area of contamina- tion in Conley Park and EPA moved quickly to iso- late the area with a fence to reduce the threat of exposure to the community. EPA continued its area of contamination identified as a threat to the public. EPA also expanded our sampling efforts within the nearby community to identify any poten- tial threat to human health, from asbestos contami- nated soil. EPA sampled a representative number of residences in the community and so far has not identified any additional asbestos contamination requiring immediate action. EPA is continuing to perform additional assessment activities to further rule out the potential for asbestos contamination that presents a health threat to the community. SITE BACKGROUND The North Little Rock Auto Salvage Site is located at 600 North Dixie Lane in North Little Rock, Pu- laski County, Arkansas. The Site was formerly the W. R. Grace Zonolite vermiculite expansion facili- ty. Records indicate that the facility accepted ap- proximately 85,050 tons of raw vermiculite between 1953 and 1989, from the W.R. Grace mine located in Libby, Montana. There was also a deposit of as- Removal Assessment Update North Little Rock Auto Salvage (Zonolite Little Rock) Site North Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas ------- bestos at that mine, so the vermiculite from Libby was contaminated with asbestos. Vermiculite from Libby was distributed for processing to a number of facilities across the country. The North Little Rock facility sits on approximately 2.4 acres of land, although vermiculite has been identified beyond the facility boundaries. This removal assessment addresses the need to iden- tify and lessen the potential threats posed by Libby, Montana asbestos-contaminated soils located on-site from the processing of vermiculite ore and the dis- posal of associated waste products at this Site by W.R. Grace/Zonolite Co.
