SETTING:

•	Greenacres Landfill operated as disposal site from the early
1940s to 1972. The landfill accepted disposal of household,
industrial and agricultural wastes. Former landfill activities
contaminated groundwater with volatile organic compounds,
semi-volatile organics and heavy metals.

•	Hie site consists of the landfill property and an associated
groundwater plume. The landfill is in a former ravine along
the north slope of Carlson Hill.

•	Site surroundings include a residential neighborhood.

•	The site is within one mile of Interstate 90.

•	The landfill property is currently owned by Holiday Hills
Development, Inc. (Liberty Lake Investments, Inc).

•	Surrounding population: 0.5 mile, 598 people | 2.5 miles,
20,824 people | 4 miles, 37,267 people.

REMEDIAL STATUS:

•	After discovering groundwater contamination in 1978,
Spokane County provided an alternative source of drinking
water to affected residences.

•	Remedy construction was completed in 1999.

•	Cleanup included a landfill cover, gas extraction system
and stormwater controls. Hollowing cleanup, groundwater
monitoring through a network of wells ensures that the
groundwater remains within acceptable standards. Landfill
