Site Name: Capitol City Plume Super fund Site Size: The site includes part of Montgomery's western downtown area. Existing Site Infrastructure: All major utilities are available on site. Current Site Uses: Downtown Montgomery remains open for business during the site's groundwater cleanup. Land uses include retail districts, neighborhoods, parks, offices and industrial areas. Use Restrictions: City regulations restrict groundwater use. SETTING: • Montgomery is the second largest city in Alabama and the state's capital. The city is located on the Alabama River in the south-central part of the state. • Revitalization of downtown Montgomery is a community priority. An entertainment district is located just west of the site. • Recent projects include the Montgomery Biscuits minor league baseball stadium, Riverwalk Stadium, redevelopment of Montgomery Civic Center into a hotel/ conference/performing arts center, retail areas, and downtown apartments and restaurants. • As of December 2016, EPA had data on 15 on-site businesses. These companies employed 144 people and generated an estimated $12.6 million in annual sales revenue. Businesses on the site include retail, faith-based organizations, hotels and community-based organizations. • Surrounding population: 0.5 mile, 1,063 people 2.5 miles, 32,619 people j 4 miles, 79,994 people. REMEDIAL STATUS: • The Alabama Department of Environmental Management is leading the site's cleanup. • The site's potentially responsible parties formed the Downtown Environmental Alliance to collaborate on cleanup strategies. • Groundwater assessments and site cleanup are ongoing. Trees were planted to take up and break down groundwater contaminants, • Groundwater contamination does not pose a risk to human health; all properties connect to the public water system. • New construction in several areas may need to consider potential vapor intrusion; long-term sampling to monitor" potential vapor intrusion risks is ongoing.
