DISPOSAL &
DISCOVERY
8,700 tons of radiologically
contaminated material was mixed
with about 39,000 tons of soil and
transported to the Landfill.
This mixture was used as daily
cover in routine landfill operations.
1973-1979
REMEDIAL
INVESTIGATION
& FEASIBILITY
STUDY
An investigation of soil and
groundwater in the
radiologically-impacted areas was
completed and alternatives for remedial
action were evaluated.
2000-2006
A
SUPPLEMENTAL
FEASIBILITY STUDY
EPA required the responsible parties to provide
information regarding the steps for and cost of
full excavation of radiologically impacted materials
(RIM). EPA then evaluated the full excavation
option against the 2008 selected remedy and
decided additional studies and investigations were
needed.

OPERABLE UNIT I
RECORD OF
DECISION
A remedy was proposed and finalized for the
radiological area. A Record of Decision is a public
document that explains the cleanup method that
will be used at a Superfund site, based on EPA
studies, public comments, and community
concerns.The remedy included consolidation of
waste materials, an enhanced landfill cover and
prevention of future uses that are not appropriate
for a landfill.
2011-2016
REVISED REMEDY
EVALUATION
Additional soil and groundwater
sampling has been performed. The
results of that sampling will be used in
a revised evaluation of various remedial
options, including the 2008 selected
remedy, partial excavation, and full
excavation.

FUTURE
PUBLIC
COMMENT ON
PROPOSED
DECISION
EPA will publish its proposed decision
on whether or not to make changes
to the 2008 ROD. If changes are
proposed, EPA will announce the
changes and will ask for public
comment on its decision.

FUTURE
CONSENT DECREE
EPA intends to negotiate an agreement with
the responsible parties to perform the cleanup
selected by EPA. That agreement would be
filed with the federal court and finalized after a
public comment period and approval by the
court. If agreement with the responsible
parties cannot be reached, EPA could issue a
Unilateral Administrative Order.
FUTURE
OPERATION &
MAINTENANCE
If hazardous substances remain on
site above levels that allow for
unrestricted use, five-year reviews
are generally required by CERCLA
to confirm that the remedy
remains protective.
